Two children and a man have escaped a huge fire on board a boat in Ryde Harbour.

Fire crews were called to the harbour at 1:30 pm today (Wednesday) after flames could be seen coming from a motor cruiser.

The blaze is now out – but there are now pollution fears after the 38-foot motor cruiser was destroyed.

Black smoke could be seen drifting over the town towards Appley.

Martin Groom, the Bembridge Coastguard’s Station Officer has told Isle of Wight Radio there are worries about the impact this could have on the harbour.

“There’s 300 litres of diesel on board. The fire brigade is still damping down. There is the potential of a pollution risk. The council are coming with pollution equipment to try and contain any diesel spilling”

There are more pictures of the fire HERE.
