Strong winds have caused damage to trees and caused powercuts across the Island overnight (Tuesday into Wednesday).

Island Roads said it cleared brambles and debris from Little Whitehouse Road, Gurnard, Green Lane, Brading, Military Road, Freshwater and Corve Hill, Shorwell.

Crews were also called to Moons Hill in Totland after a garden gazebo ended up in the road.

A spokesperson for Island Roads said it was a busy night for the teams, but preparations were made so there was no disruption to early morning traffic.

Several postcodes on the outskirts of Newport have been affected by a powercut. Scottish and Southern Electric said it hopes to have power restored by 2pm.

Winds were recorded at 69mph at The Needles as Storm Aileen battered parts of England.
