The Isle of Wight’s much anticipated Asda superstore will open on 21 August, ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend.

Work on the new 45k square foot store is ongoing, on a site adjacent to St George’s Park on the outskirts of Newport.
Asda says it has invested around £40 million and says it has created over 250 jobs, from more than 3000 applications.
Kenny Farrell, general store manager at Asda Newport, said:
“We’re excited to finally let our soon-to-be customers know exactly what to expect from our Newport store. We’ve worked really hard to ensure that the needs of all shoppers, be they locals or holidaymakers, in need of many or few items, are met by what our store has to offer.

“There has been a great response to the store to date and as a team, we can’t wait to throw open our doors and get to know the Isle of Wight and its residents properly in August.”

Ofsted has today (Thursday) published its inspection results for Newport C of E Primary School – and it is good news.

Inspectors have rated the school as ‘good’ in the quality of teaching and ‘outstanding’ for early years provision.

Highlights from the report include:

  • The executive headteacher sets an ambitious vision for the school.
  • Pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities make good progress. Support and links with outside agencies are effective.
  • Early years provision has improved since the last inspection and is highly effective. Children make very rapid progress in their development of early language, literacy and mathematics.

The findings show the school has made changes following the last monitoring inspection visit in December 2015, when a report stated the school ‘required improvement’.

However, today’s report has suggested teachers’ expectations of pupils isn’t high enough, which is slowing their progress in school.

To become ‘Outstanding’, the school will need to improve the quality of teaching by challenging the most able and encourage students to write across a wider range of subjects to develop their writing skills.

Read the report in full, including how the school has performed in previous inspections.

“There has been loads going on for the children. The event has been very student led, with support and help from the teachers.

“It really showcases how amazing Sandown Bay is and showcases our capabilities of holding big sporting events.

“The event has allowed children to meet with other kids and interact, and show them that high school is a good place to be.

“We’ve had opening and closing ceremonies with music, cheering and medal ceremonies. It’s been a relaxed event – but there are definitely a few competitive children out there!”

Residents in East Cowes are being told by Southern Water that some slight discolouring to tap water is not harmful.

Some homes in the town have experienced discoloration due to some routine flushing of Southern Water’s cast iron water mains, which the company said it does proactively from time to time in order to help keep pipes running clear.

Southern water said residents are notified about when the flushing is taking place, nut on this occasion, some properties didn’t receive the information.

A Southern Water spokesperson said:

“Discolouration to water supply is not harmful and, although it may not look nice, will usually clear within 24-48 hours.

“We let customers know in advance in case they experience any discolouration during our work but unfortunately, water supply to some properties not in our notification area was also affected by discolouration.

“As a precaution, as soon as we were aware of the issue we stopped flushing, cleared the pipes and provided bottled water to affected customers to drink until their water cleared. We will be investigating why some properties not in the notified flush zone were affected and will do the full flush again when we are confident that no other properties will be impacted.

“We would like to apologise to our customers who were impacted and assure them we are working hard to investigate how this happened.”

Pressures on the Isle of Wight’s St Mary’s Hospital have forced the cancellation of some routine appointments.

A significantly high number of very poorly patients admitted to hospital and ongoing difficulties in discharging patients resulted in the need to postpone some in-patient surgery yesterday (Wednesday).

The hospital said in the last week (Wednesday 14 to Tuesday 20) 1,408 people phoned NHS 111, a 13 per cent increase on the same week in 2016. Meanwhile, 952 people attended the Emergency Department in the last week, an 18 per cent increase on the same week last year – and there were 234 emergency admissions during the last week, a 4.5 per cent on the same week last year.

The Island NHS Trust said:

“Hospital staff are working hard to create capacity to care for patients who need immediate care which has resulted in a small number of procedures having to be cancelled.

“We apologise to every patient whose surgery we have had to postpone. Disrupting planned procedures is an absolute last resort. All patients who are affected by these postponements have been advised and will be rescheduled as soon as possible.”

Nikki Turner, Deputy Chief Operating Officer at Isle of Wight NHS Trust, said:

“The hospital is incredibly busy and we are finding it difficult to maintain business as usual as we have limited bed capacity in the hospital and in the community to accommodate the volume of patients requiring care.

“We also have a number of individuals who are medically stable but who cannot move out of the hospital for a number of reasons and we are continuing to work with the Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the local authority’s social service teams and the Island’s nursing and residential care homes to ensure those ready to leave hospital can be found appropriate placements.

“We ask for families to work with us and support us in any way they can to be able to discharge those relatives who are ready to leave hospital. Nobody wants to be in hospital any longer than necessary, especially in this heat.”

Although temperatures have cooled today (Thursday) the Level 3 heatwave alert issued by the Met Office on Monday remains in place and vulnerable groups are at risk in hot spells. Anyone with an ongoing health condition should take care as heat can make some conditions worse. It is important for people to take precautions to ensure they keep out of the sun, wear sun cream, drink plenty of water to keep hydrated, avoid any strenuous activity and check on older people or neighbours, family or friends, make sure they are keeping themselves cool.

If you think you need help we would ask you to phone NHS 111 first and they may be able to offer you alternative treatment options like seeing your GP or a pharmacist. Information on self care can be found on the NHS Choices website at www.nhs.uk/selfcare  and www.what0-18.nhs.uk, a website for parents of children.

IS fighters have blown up al Nuri mosque in Mosul, where the group’s leader declared the caliphate, the Iraqi military has said.

The Ministry of Defence said fighters had detonated explosives inside the structures, destroying the mosque and its iconic leaning minaret.

A statement from the commander of the Mosul offensive, Staff Lieutenant General Abdulamir Yarallah, said the explosion took place as Iraqi forces, which have been advancing in the Old City, were within 50 metres of the building.

The Daesh (Islamic State) terror gangs committed another historical crime by blowing up the al Nuri mosque and its historical al-Hadba minaret, the statement said.

The medieval mosque, also known as Mosul’s Great Mosque, is where IS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi declared a so-called Islamic caliphate in 2014. It was seen as a key symbolic prize in the fight for Mosul.

The minaret stood for more than 840 years.

IS has blamed a US strike for the mosque’s destruction.

Sky News chief correspondent Stuart Ramsay in Erbil, Iraq, said: We spoke to a senior commander who was on the ground and he said it was an explosion on the ground, not an airstrike.

He said there is a huge amount of fighting taking place around the mosque right now.

The first pictures we’ve seen would suggest that it is almost completely destroyed and the famous minaret has gone.

Iraqi forces this week launched a push into Mosul’s Old City, where the last IS fighters are holed up with an estimated 100,000 civilians, according to the UN.

The fight to retake Mosul was launched more than eight months ago and has displaced some 850,000 people.

The union representing firefighters who tackled the Grenfell Tower disaster has told Sky News it has "major concerns" over fire safety building regulations in England.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) is sending a letter to MPs today insisting the union must be named as a core participant in the public inquiry announced by Theresa May.

It is calling on the Prime Minister to provide clarification on the inquiry’s scope and terms of reference.

So far 79 people have been confirmed dead in the disaster although that number is expected to rise.

In the letter shown to Sky News, the FBU says firefighters want justice for the victims and families, saying its members responded to the incident with great courage and professionalism.

The union also raises concerns about fire safety regulations.

Current building regulations in England are ambiguous about fire safety matters on cladding, and inadequate on sprinklers, it says.

Fire risk assessors do not have to be properly qualified. The fire and rescue service no longer enforces fire safety to the same extent it did in the past.

The letter goes on to say: The FBU believes the public inquiry will fail the victims of the Grenfell fire and betray communities across the UK if it does not address the critical matter of fire safety protection for every home and every workplace.

That cannot be allowed to happen.

It has been reported by the Government that the cladding used in the refurbishment of Grenfell Tower was banned in the UK.

The FBU claims there has also been a fall in the number of fire safety inspections in people’s homes over recent years, blaming budget cuts.

Home fire safety checks in England have fallen by 25% according to Home Office figures, whether measured by the number of visits or the hours spent on these checks, it said.

This is not about targeting vulnerable people, which is the common excuse given for the decline – there are fewer firefighters available to carry out this irreplaceable, life-saving work.

The Home Office told Sky News: Government and fire authorities invest significantly in fire prevention and the total number of fires attended has fallen by half over the last 10 years.

According to the FBU, more than 11,000 front-line firefighter jobs have been lost across the UK since 2010.

A well-known lifestyle blogger in France has been killed by an exploding whipped cream dispenser, her family has said.

Rebecca Burger, 33, died after the pressurised canister exploded, violently hitting her chest.

French media reports that the impact brought on a cardiac arrest and although she received medical attention, she could not be saved.

It is with great sadness we announce the death of Rebecca who died the June 18th, 2017 in an accident in the home, her family, including her husband, said in a statement on her Instagram account.

Another post included a photograph of a dispenser, alongside a warning not to use similar devices.

Here is an example of a whipped cream canister that exploded and struck Rebecca’s chest, resulting in her death, the post read.

Do not use this kind of utensil in your home! Tens of thousands of defective devices are still in circulation.

Police are investigating Ms Burger’s death.

Her 55,000 Facebook friends and 158,000 Instagram followers reacted with disbelief to the news.

One wrote on her Facebook page: A beautiful woman, full of life. All my condolences to the family.

I am horrified by what happened, said another.

They described her as their body princess, bikini icon and a beautiful athlete and coach, who would be greatly missed.

French fitness website Women’s Best also paid tribute to the blogger: Rebecca was not only a great fitness figure but a generous and kind person to work with.

Several similar incidents involving exploding cream dispensers have occurred in France in recent years, but no one has been killed.

France’s National Consumer Institute (INC) issued a warning in 2014 about such gadgets, French newspaper Le Parisien reported.

A UK tech firm locked in a licencing row with Apple has put itself up for sale after receiving bid interest.

Imagination Technologies, whose shares trade on the FTSE 250, lost 70% of its market value at one stage on 3 April when the world’s most valuable listed company announced plans to stop buying Imagination’s processing products and make its own alternatives.

At the time, Apple was its largest customer – accounting for around half its annual revenue – and a major shareholder.

It prompted the Hertfordshire-based company to launch a dispute resolution procedure under its licence agreement with Apple to seek new licencing terms and royalties in a bid to avoid the prospect of a costly intellectual property battle in the courts.

It later announced it was looking to sell its MIPS and Ensigma operations – focused on embedded processors and connectivity respectively.

News of the group sale helped Imagination shares rally 16.4% by closing.

The company said: Imagination Technologies Group announces that over the last few weeks it has received interest from a number of parties for a potential acquisition of the whole group.

The board of Imagination has therefore decided to initiate a formal sale process for the group and is engaged in preliminary discussions with potential bidders.

The sale process for the MIPS and Ensigma operations, which commenced on 4 May 2017, is progressing well and indicative proposals have been received for both businesses.

Neil Wilson, senior market analyst at ETX Capital, said buyers were keen as Imagination’s shares remained 60% down on where they were before the Apple row ahead of the market opening.

He added: It was never going to be easy for Imagination Technologies when it lost its biggest customer and efforts to offload two of its three main businesses – MIPS and Ensigma – in a bid to strengthen the balance sheet clearly weren’t enough.

These were both strong potential growth areas that could have delivered lasting revenue accretion to offset the loss of Apple.

That was a pretty dire scenario, akin to selling off the family silver to keep the estate going a little longer.

Now the shutters are up and a buyer sought. A pretty ignominious end to what was a great British tech success story.

Theresa May is expected to provide her fellow European Union leaders with detail on the status and rights which the UK plans to offer EU citizens living in Britain after Brexit.

Attending her first European Council Summit since her disastrous general election, it is understood the Prime Minister will explain the UK’s principles on the issue of citizens’ rights – a key early topic in the Brexit negotiations.

Her party’s lost majority, weakened negotiating hand as well as the apparent division on what Brexit means among her own cabinet is raising questions in Europe about her stability as PM.

She will seek to reassure her fellow leaders of her commitment to a fair Brexit deal for both sides by presenting an overview of the UK’s intentions regarding the estimated 3.2 million EU citizens currently living in Britain.

The two-day Brussels summit will predominately focus on counter-terrorism, common defence and security.

Two foiled terrorist attacks this week alone put renewed focus on EU-wide efforts to improve counter-terrorism measures.

In Paris on Monday, a man was apprehended after he tried to ram his car into police on the Champs Elysee and in Brussels on Tuesday, a man attempted to detonate a nail bomb in the city’s Central Station. No one was injured in either incident.

At the end of a working dinner, Mrs May is expected to address the other 27 leaders on Brexit and the issue of citizens’ rights.

It is the most tangible human consequence of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union: the status and prospects for 3.2 million EU citizens who currently live in the UK and the 1.2 million Britons who live elsewhere in the European Union.

Their prospects are unclear given that the UK will become a so-called third country once it leaves the union.

The remaining member states have shown increasing levels of irritation at the UK’s failure to commit to protecting the rights of their citizens in the UK.

Issues such as pensions, healthcare and residency status are all at stake. Even EU nationals married to Britons have been unsure of their status post-Brexit.

In turn, British citizens in the EU have been offered no details or assurances on their future.

Mrs May is not expected to detail any of the specifics of how citizens rights will be protected but instead give broad assurances.

Her EU counterparts will expect her to go further than her government’s February Brexit White Paper pledge to give people the certainty they want… at the earliest opportunity. It is the right and fair thing to do.

One key question is when the cut-off date for citizens rights to be protected should be.

The cut-off date is simple: it is the day when the UK leaves the EU [March 2019]. But protection should apply for the life time of the citizens who are concerned. Mr Barnier said in May.

The EU side has already issued a detailed position paper on citizens rights.

In short it says EU citizens must be able to continue to live in Britain even if they arrived just before Brexit day, and that they must be allowed to apply for UK citizenship and all the benefits that come with it.

If Mrs May accedes to that EU demand it will be seen by some as the second capitulation by the UK government in the space of a week.

On Monday, the EU negotiating side said the UK had agreed to its sequential structure for the negotiations, despite Brexit Secretary David Davis’ previous claims that his demand for divorce and trade talks in parallel would be the row of the summer.

One key issue within the citizens’ rights negotiation basket is the EU demand that after Brexit, EU nationals living in the UK will retain access to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) to protect their rights in Britain.

This would be a red line for the UK because it would give the ECJ higher authority than UK courts – opposition to which was a key motivation for Brexit.

The UK expects that the EU side will compromise on this point.

Citizens rights is one of three baskets to be dealt with in the first phase of the negotiations which began on Monday.

The other two baskets – Britain’s financial settlement (the so-called exit bill) and the Irish border question – will almost certainly be more complicated to agree on.

The UK has accepted that the European Council will decide when sufficient progress has been made on these three baskets to allow talks on the EU/UK future relationship to begin.

The chief executive of Kensington and Chelsea council has resigned following criticism of its response to the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy.

In a statement, Nicholas Holgate said: Serving the families so desperately affected by the heartbreaking tragedy at Grenfell Tower remains the highest priority of the council.

He said there is a huge amount still to do for the victims in very challenging circumstances.

He added: If I stayed in post, my presence would be a distraction.

I strongly believe that councillors and officers have always endeavoured to have the interests of our residents at heart and will continue to do so.

Mr Holgate said the Communities and Local Government Secretary Sajid Javid had required the leader of the council to seek my resignation.

Leader of the Council Nicholas Paget-Brown said: It is with great regret that I have today accepted Nicholas Holgate’s resignation.

Like everyone else, the Council has been grief stricken by the tragedy of the Grenfell Tower fire and has sought to provide the greatest level of support we can to victims.

That is a huge challenge and Nicholas has led from the front in seeking to do this. However, the Council will now need to work in a new way with different partners to take this forward.
