Coronavirus: Students Testing Positive At Uni Could Impact Isle Of Wight Data

The Island's coronavirus figures could include positive results from Isle of Wight students living at university.

The Isle of Wight's Director of Public Health, Simon Bryant, says some students furthering their education on the mainland may still be registered with their GP on the Island.

It means that if they test positive while at university, the case would still be recorded on the Isle of Wight's data.

Mr Bryant says the numbers are "very small" and the council would look at each case on an individual basis.

Speaking at the council's Local Outbreak Engagement Board meeting, he said:

"So with regard to students, people are tested where they live. However with new students it takes a few weeks to physically register with their GP practice so those figures may well connect back with their residence which may well be on the Isle of Wight if they've grown up here.

"So we do look at that very carefully. The numbers will be connected to the Isle of Wight, however where they actually are residing currently may not be the Isle of Wight."

Cabinet member for adult social care, Councillor Claire Mosdell, said her daughter took "quite a while" to register at her university GP.

She said it could mean we have a test result showing as being from the Isle of Wight, but actually they could be a student in Nottingham, for example.

Mr Bryant confirmed that to be the case and said it was something being looked at "very carefully".

The number of confirmed cases on the Island currently stands at 492, after a rise of six yesterday (Thursday).
