May Day Bank Holiday Recycling And Waste Collection Information

Island residents are being reminded that rubbish and recycling collections will not be affected over the May Day (6 May) bank holiday.

The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed there will be:

no changes to your waste/recycling collection service for Monday 6 May;
no change to all waste and recycling collections due the week commencing 6 May;
no change to recycling centres opening hours over Monday 6 May — please book your trip as usual in advance and check opening times at www.iow.gov.uk/waste
Reuse and Bulky Waste Collections will continue as normal.

The council does ask that Monday collection residents place their waste or recycling out early as normal by 7am on 6 May.

Having a barbecue get together, if the weather permits? Here are some safety tips:

Avoid accidental fires by drenching ashes with water and let them cool completely for at least 48 hours.
Never put hot ash or part-burned materials from domestic or garden fires or barbecues/portable barbecues in the bin.
Barbecues are for outdoor purposes only, you must never light one indoors or in an enclosed space such as a balcony or communal walkway.
Used disposable barbecues that are buried under beach sand remain at high temperatures for long periods causing horrific burns injuries should anyone step on the area. Always drench with cold water and allow to cool completely before placing in communal bins.
Never pour petrol or any other accelerants on to a barbecue — it really is an accident waiting to happen.
Binning hot barbecues puts refuse workers and the general public at risk. It also puts more pressure on emergency services.
