Operators of the Cowes/East Cowes Chain Ferry are awaiting high tide at 9pm in a bid to refloat the vessel after an earlier grounding.
The floating bridge service had to be suspended at about 6.40pm on Tuesday evening.
In a social media update from Isle of Wight Council, the authority said:
The Cowes chain ferry is currently out of service following a grounding. A passenger launch is in operation until the ferry can be re-floated around 9pm tonight. We apologise for any inconvenience.
A passenger launch was in operation at 7.20pm and motorists were being diverted via Newport.
