Bus Shelter For The Island’s Homeless Opens Its Doors

After months of planning, hard work, fundraising events and countless donations from Island businesses and volunteers, the world’s first homeless shelter on wheels is finally being rolled out.

In an announcement on Facebook over the weekend, founder of The Bus Shelter, Kevin Newton, declared that the innovative homeless shelter will open its doors today (Monday).

The Bus Shelter – named Sanctuary by Island residents – is exactly as the name suggests. It provides a warm, safe place for homeless people on the Island to spend the night – which is particularly welcome as we head into winter.

Sleeping up to 20 people at a time, the one-of-a-kind bus has a series of bunk beds, a fitted kitchen, lounge area, a log burner and washing and toilet facilities.

Kevin said on his Facebook post:

“From Monday evening [tonight], we will be providing food, shelter, warmth, safety, and hope to our homeless.

“Thank you to all our supporters. Without you this would not be possible.

“You are literally lifesavers.”
