A Ventnor building that partially collapsed yesterday evening (Tuesday) is dangerous and unsafe, according to the Isle of Wight Council.

However, the local authority’s building control officers say the problem appears to be with the effected building and not neighbouring properties, or with ground movement.
The residents of the building in Alexandra Gardens (which is split into flats and includes a holiday let) have been evacuated. Those living next door have also left their homes. The Isle of Wight Council says all those effected have found alternative accommodation with friends and family.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was called to Ventnor just after 7.30pm yesterday. A four storey bay window has partially collapsed, directly affecting four flats (and indirectly effecting a further four apartments).
The Isle of Wight Council says the building owners will be contacting their own insurance companies and the council building control will be working with them.
Pier Road – from the High Street to the junction of Alexandra Gardens – is closed. Access to the sea front is via Hambrough Road.
The safety cordon will remain in place until the property owners have taken action to remove the danger and the council will continue to monitor the situation.
