Heavy traffic in Newport is expected to continue into this evening (Thursday), after a burst water main has closed Fairlee Road.

As earlier reported by Isle of Wight Radio, repairs are being carried out after more than 100 homes were left without water.

A Southern Water spokesperson told Isle of Wight Radio:

“Having uncovered the hole in the pipe, we have found it to be bigger than we’d anticipated. This means we’re having to cut out the damaged section and replace it and will unfortunately result in the repair taking a bit longer than we’d hoped.”

Southern Water added:

We apologise to all road users for the continued road closure, as we understand it can be frustrating. However, we’re asking drivers to please observe the road diversions which are in place to keep both drivers and our workers safe, and which will mean we can finish this emergency work as quickly as possible.”

It says it has delivered bottled water to the 136 properties affected.
