A protest is expected to take place later as a campaign to save the Studio School in East Cowes steps up, with just one week left of the “listening period”.

The Inspire Academy Trust that runs the school says it could close in summer 2019, because it has not been able to recruit sufficient students to its sixth form.

In a statement last month (April), it said “such a small school cannot continue long-term”.

A petition has been set up and it has already recorded more than 14,000 signatures.

Later today (Wednesday) campaigners who want the school to stay will gather outside County Hall. They want the local authority to issue a statement of support.

A final decision on whether it will remain open will be made by the Department for Education, in conjunction with the Trust.

The Inspire Academy Trust says that if the final decision is to close, students intending to start at the school in September 2018 will be able to continue at their existing school or explore a transfer to another school.
