Firefighters from the mainland had to be drafted in to help cover local fire stations while Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue battled a huge St Lawrence fire in undergrowth yesterday (Wednesday).

Six appliances, two water carriers and command support were all at the scene, near Old Park Rd , where an area of copse covering 100 x 50 metres was alight.

Nearby homeowners were on standby to be evacuated, but the fire was under control before any action needed to be taken.

Fire engines from across the Solent were brought over to the Isle of Wight to cover other Island stations while local firefighter were at the scene,

No injuries were reported in the St Lawrence Fire according to Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue.

The fire was out by 9.10pm, some seven hours after it was initially reported at 1.50pm.
