Actor and director Sean Astin – famous for his roles in Lord of the Rings, Stranger Things and The Goonies – has pulled out of this year’s Island Con.

According to organisers of the event, he has been cast in a new show and the schedule clashes with Island Con, which is happening on 20 and 21 October at Cowes Enterprise College.

In a statement, Island Con said:

“Unfortunately, Sean Astin cancels his appearance on the Isle of Wight this year.

“It has been confirmed that Sean has been cast in a new show and the schedule unfortunately clashes with Island Con. Great to see that Sean is in such demand right now! He has gracefully tried to mitigate the schedule to fit the event but it cannot be worked in.”

Sean – who played Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Mikey Walsh in The Goonies and Bob Newby in the second season of Stranger Things – said:

“I am so so sorry to have to cancel this appearance after everything we’ve all put into making it work.”

Island Con organisers say future guests will be announced soon and anyone who had a photo opportunity booked with Sean can get a refund.
