Newport Football Club has announced that two of its teams have been withdrawn from their respective Isle of Wight football leagues.

In a statement, the club says its reserve side has pulled out of Division 1 – citing player departures as the reason.

Newport A have also withdrawn from Combination 2.

The club says this was done to try and prevent the reserves from pulling out, something which ultimately proved unsuccessful.

A statement reads:

“Sadly I have to inform you that our Reserve Team have withdrawn from the Island League Division 1. A series of events led players to leave for other clubs.

“We withdrew our A team from the combination league in an effort to keep the reserves going, however, this has proved unsuccessful and we were unable to field a side last Saturday.

“We shall use the next few months to get a more stable set up in place that will allow our junior teams participate successfully next season in whatever league we enter.”

Newport’s first team won 2-0 at Fawley last night in the Wessex League First Division.

This Saturday (14) is National Non-League Day and the Port are at home to Ringwood Town.

It’s designed to raise awareness of grassroots football and also aims to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.
