The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service had to bring in extra standby measures to ensure it could guarantee retained cover, amidst mobile network problems in the Newport area yesterday (Monday).

Users of Vodafone and O2 networks have been told to expect ‘days of disruption‘, as maintenance is carried out.

Isle of Wight Radio understands that a system to contact retained firefighters (the part-time crews that provide back-up cover to the Island’s whole-time teams) was affected by the outage.

Team leads were brought in to contact crews if needed, Isle of Wight Radio has been told.

We have been told that the retained crews’ pagers are not affected today (Tuesday), however.
