Never has the adage ‘if you want something doing, doing it yourself’ been more apt than in Cowes Sports’ clash against bottom side Andover New Street on Saturday (9).

The Yachtsman went into the home tie six points above their opponents in 18th place, knowing three points would take them a step closer to escaping the drop zone.
The Island side lined up with striker and recently-appointed player-manager John McKie in the starting 11 and that decision – albeit made by himself – certainly paid off.
After a lot of possession and a corner which was not cleared properly by Andover’s back line, McKie picked up the ball on the edge of the area and managed to unleash an unstoppable effort, bending the ball into the keeper’s top left-hand corner.
1-0 to the Yachtsman.
Not only did the goal leave those spectating it in awe, it has also left a few watching online speechless too. As of Monday (11) evening, the video of the goal – shared by Grassroots Football UK – has over 11,000 views.
Unfortunately for Cowes, they could not hold on and just after half-time – 49 minutes in – the visitors managed to draw level. Neither side could find a winner and the game finished 1-1.
The result leaves the Islanders in 18th place in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division and Andover New Town remain in 20th.
Meanwhile, in the Sydenhams Wessex Division One Newport lost 1-0 away to Amesbury Town and East Cowes Vics managed to pick up a 1-nil win over AFC Stoneham.
Port are in 7th and Vics are in 9th.
East Cowes Vics and Shanklin Ladies games were both postponed.
