Islanders are being warned of a new council tax email scam circulating on the Isle of Wight.

Trading standards says a resident has received an email purporting to be from the government telling them they have made an overpayment on their council tax – and are subsequently due a refund.

The email directs those receiving it to a link which then takes them to a form requesting bank and card details.

Islanders are being told not to click on this link – or fill out the form – and to delete emails of this kind immediately.

Council tax payments are made to the Isle of Wight Council and not a government website. The local authority will never contact individuals in this way.
