The Isle of Wight’s football sides were back in action this weekend, and it was Cowes men and women sides who walked away as the big winners.
Cowes Sports men’s team went into their Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division game against Bashley on Saturday (23) in 19th place – knowing a win would take them one step closer to escaping the drop zone.
And, they did not disappoint. The Yachtsmen came out worthy winners in a seven-goal thriller against their opponents, who were flying high in eighth position at the time.
Captain John McKie was at the double for the home side as they ran out 4-3 winners.
Cowes move up one place to 18th.
Meanwhile, in Division One Newport lost 4-2 at Amesbury Town. And, fellow Islanders East Cowes Vics lost 2-1 away at Fawley.
Newport end the week in ninth and East Cowes Vics are in seventh.
On Sunday (24), Cowes Ladies followed up their 7-0 thrashing of Winchester City Flyers last week (17).
They travelled to this week’s opponents Fordingbridge Turks Ladies running out 4-1 winners.
The win leaves them in ninth in the Hampshire County Women’s Football League.
While, Shanklin lost 2-1 at home to Wargrave in the Southern Region Women’s Football League.
Shanklin Ladies are rooted to the foot of the table in 10th.
