A double from midfielder Connor Kelly got Newport back to winning ways this weekend (2).

Port went into their game against AFC Petersfield in 8th, one place behind rivals East Cowes who started the day in 7th.

They were looking to bounce back from a 4-2 defeat to Amesbury Town last Saturday (23).

It was not the best of starts for the Island side who conceded a penalty in just the sixth minute.

However, keeper Gary Streeter managed to keep it out. And, just half an hour later the away team got up and running thanks to a 35-yard strike from Neo Lamb.

A quickfire double from Connor Kelly sealed the three points for Port who move up to 7th in the Sydenhams Wessex Division One.

Meanwhile, Cowes Sports continued their fine form in the Premier Division, beating Shaftesbury 1-0.

It follows their 4-3 victory against Bashley last weekend. They sit in 18th.

Meanwhile, East Cowes Vics drew 1-1 with Verwood and drop to 8th.

Yesterday (Sunday), East Cowes Vics Ladies lost 2-0 to Bedhampton Village in the Hampshire County Women’s football league. They stay in 11th.

Shanklin Ladies and Cowes Ladies’ games were called off.
