A major incident has been declared following a crash between a bus and two cars in Newport today (Sunday).

Emergency teams, including five crews from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, are at Forest Road at its junction with Betty Haunt Lane.

Three air ambulances are also in attendance to assist with those injured, as well as a number of police vehicles.

The collision has been described as ‘serious’ by firefighters.

The road remains closed this afternoon- and drivers are being urged to stay away from the area.

Richard Tyldsley, Southern Vectis general manager, said:

“We are aware of a serious collision today involving one of our route 7 buses. At this stage the full circumstances and details of any injuries are unclear and we are investigating.”

* People are being urged to avoid going to St Mary’s Hospital’s Emergency Department unless “absolutely necessary”.

**Four people have been airlifted to mainland hospitals and fifteen patients have been taken into St Mary’s Hospital, the Isle of Wight NHS has confirmed.
