Trading Standards is warning Isle of Wight businesses to be ‘very wary’ of a new scam.

Scammers are reportedly calling businesses and claiming to be a debt collector on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council collecting for unpaid Business Rates.

They told the business that they were outside, and if they did not immediately pay the sum demanded they would enter the premises and collect goods to the value of the debt.

They would only accept a bank transfer and intimidated the proprietor into making the payment.

A spokesperson for Trading Standards said:

“Be aware the Isle of Wight Council and any other legitimate organisation will never contact you in this way. This is a SCAM.

“If you receive a call like this and aren’t sure if it is genuine use contact details that you have found legitimately to contact the organisation concerned and check if it is genuine.”
