Supplier SSE has told Isle of Wight Radio that a high vaultage fault has affected around 700 homes across the PO36, PO37 and PO38 areas of Shanklin and Ventnor.
Engineers arrived on site at 10pm and were isolating the fault, with an aim to switch on supplies to as many homes as possible.
Those for whom power is not immediately restored should be back on by midnight, said SSE.
Firefighters from Sandown and Shanklin were called to Lower Hyde at about 9.20pm and one Isle of Wight Radio listener said he had heard “three explosions” in the Shanklin area.
Much of the Island saw lights flicker.
