Police are investigating after a fire broke out at a former care home in Sandown this afternoon (Sunday).

As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio, firefighters were called to the ground floor of a derelict building – believed to be the Stonehaven residential home on Carter Street – just before 1pm.

Multiple crews attended the incident and the blaze was put out shortly after.

Hampshire Constabulary says it has now launched an investigation. A spokesperson said:

“Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fire in a derelict building on Carter Street, Sandown.

“The incident was reported to us at 1.25pm on Sunday, 9 June.”
