A man accused of shining a light at a police helicopter has appeared in court on the Isle of Wight today (Friday).

Nicholas Hawkins of Heathfield Road in Bembridge faced a charge at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court.

The 53 year-old is accused of directing or shining a light at an aircraft in flight so as to dazzle or distract the pilot.

It followed a search for a missing person on Tuesday 26 March in the Brading area. The person was located safe and well at Yaverland beach at 10:10pm.

During this search, police said a light source was shone at the police helicopter.

Mr Hawkins pleaded not guilty and will appear at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on August 15.
