The Isle of Wight Council wants to try to acquire land and buildings in East Cowes and Cabinet Members will tomorrow (Thursday) consider proposals to negotiate with Homes England (HE).
The local authority wants to target Victoria Quay, so it can maintain marine and other industries in the historic Columbine building. It also wants to develop land at Albany and Maresfield for housing; and create facilities at the former ‘Barracks’ building.
It would be the latest twist in the long running saga of the planned development of East Cowes. More than a decade ago, the now-defunct SEEDA was given permission to build houses and leisure facilities there.
Last year, the revised scheme collapsed when a developer pulled out of the project.
Meanwhile, when Cowes’ Medina Yard development was given the go-ahead, there were fears for the Island’s marine industry accessing deep water. A replacement site was suggested, further along the River Medina, but work there has yet to start.
Red Funnel has already demolished the former home of AMC marine as it moves forward with its controversial plans for a new terminal.
The Isle of Wight Council’s cabinet meets at County Hall from 5pm on Thursday.
