There are long delays in and around Shanklin, Lake and Apse Heath today (Wednesday) due to the closure of Shanklin Road and the bottom section of Victoria Avenue for underground works.

As previously reported, the road is shut until 9.30pm for Island Roads to carry out work on an underground tunnel which carries water from Scotchell’s Brook.

Hi-tech work is taking place several metres underneath the road in Shanklin and is designed to strengthen the culvert – (that’s the tunnel which carries water).

Island Roads says the work is vital to stabilise and strengthen it – given the major disruption that would occur if it were allowed to deteriorate, or even collapse.

Work started on Monday (15 July) when a temporary ramp structure was created during an overnight closure.

Tomorrow (Thursday) the road will again be closed overnight (6pm to 6.30am) to allow the equipment to be removed from site. Temporary traffic lights are also in place.
