A person has been rescued from the Solent between Yarmouth and Lymington and airlifted to hospital today (Wednesday).

HM Coastguard says that just before 11.30am a person was reported to be in the water and required assistance.

The search and rescue helicopter from Lee-on-the-Solent was already in the area and was sent to the scene.

The person has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital, according to HM Coastguard.

Meanwhile, as a result of today’s emergency incident, Wightlink has cancelled a number of sailings:

14.05, 16.05 and 18.05 from Yarmouth

13.00, 15.00 and 17.00 from Lymington
