An 84-year-old Butchers in Newport will have its doors open to customers for the last time today (Saturday) for customers.
However, the company is being taken over by Bembridge based family butcher W.W. Woodford & Son, so residents will still have a butcher to go to.
The previous owner of Downer’s Butcher’s, Greg Downer told Isle of Wight Radio,
“As you can imagine we were devastated at having to close due to my health and leave Newport and our customers without a butchers shop. When Graham approached us to use our shop to open a branch in Newport, we were over the moon. Graham has an excellent reputation and is a good traditional butcher. We feel he will look after our customers and friends, giving them the quality meat they are accustomed to. We wish him all the best in his venture.”
The reason for the closure is due to the ill health of its owner Greg Downer, who’s been in the job for 55 years.
