Wightlink has apologised to Islanders after a fault with its new contactless system at Ryde Pier saw many miss their boat – and have their journeys delayed.

Dozens of vehicles were forced to a queue on Sunday (6) due to a ‘technical issue’ with the barrier.

Wightlink customers have told Isle of Wight Radio that contactless payments would not work – and when they attempted to pay they were met with ‘a big red cross’.

The ferry firm says it is ‘sorry’ for delays caused and the issue has now been resolved.

A Wightlink spokesperson said:

“Wightlink is sorry some customers were delayed on Sunday by a technical issue affecting the new contactless payment technology on Ryde Pier. It has now been resolved.

“The system requires customers to place their contactless card on the pad for three seconds for payment to be authorised.”

As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio, a new system was implemented last month (September).

It saw the cost of driving up Ryde Pier double from £1 to £2.
