A controlled explosion has taken place on a World War Two hand grenade.
Bembridge Coastguard was called just after 7am yesterday (Sunday) to reports of the find on the beach at Yaverland.
Portsmouth’s Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team was already out on another job, so the team kept a safe exclusion zone until they arrived shortly after 4pm.
The EOD team identified it as a WW2 Mills Grenade and destroyed it where it was found.
Coastguards were stood down at 5.30pm.

Shortly after returning to station, Bembridge Coastguard was called back to Sandown following concerns for a kayaker who was half a mile out to sea in failing light.
He was kept under observation until he reached the shore.
