50th Sports Awards will have an Olympic spirit

Almost 80 nominees will be in the running for the 50th Isle of Wight Sports Achievement

Awards, which take place at Medina Theatre, Newport on March 27 .


The half-century edition of the awards will also celebrate the Island’s Olympians over the years, with several past Olympic competitors expected to be present on the night.


WRS Systems have come on board as the platinum sponsor of the event, which will see

sporting stars aged from eight to 80, rewarded for some amazing achievements.


The glittering awards night, organised by the Isle of Wight Sports Foundation, will be

presented by well-known Island broadcasters and journalists Lucy Morgan, Harriet Hadfield and Matt White.


Newport-based WRS, who provide industry-leading, secure Epos (Electronic point of sale)

solutions to the hospitality, retail, sport, travel and education sectors across the UK, Europe

and beyond, have a long history of supporting good causes on the Island.


As well as WRS Systems, a host of well-known Island businesses and charities have

sponsored individual categories.


A total of 24 awards will be handed out – in categories ranging from junior boys and girls to

masters sports people.


There will also be special awards for Service to Sport. Lifetime Achievement and

Outstanding Commitment, honouring Isle of Wight sport’s heroes behind the scenes.


The IW Lord Lieutenant, IW High Sheriff, the Island’s two MPs and representatives of the IW

Council and sponsors are among the guests invited.


Claire Beasley, chair of the foundation, said:


“We are looking forward to making this a truly special night, celebrating the incredible sports people and teams the Isle of Wight produces.
“Guest will also enjoy a special Olympics film produced by Richard Priest and edited by the
Isle of Wight Observer’s Tilly Walder.”
