The Isle of Wight is one of the few areas in England with permanent red squirrel populations and Easter is an ideal time to take a walk and, if you are lucky and quiet, spot our only native wild squirrel.

Vanessa Fawcett, operations director of the Red Squirrel Survival Trust, says it is important that young people do see them, saying:

“Numbers of reds in the wild are stable and when anyone, particularly children and young people see one they often want to help support their survival.
"Take binoculars and look up into the tree canopy.  Good luck.

The best places to spot red squirrels on the Isle are Borthwick Copse, the Newport to Cowes cycle track and Shanklin Chine and Village.

“If you do see a red, please do not try to get close as it will scamper away — If you take your dog, please keep it on a lead,” Vanessa concludes.
