The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has reacted to news that around 800 jobs on the Island and in Portsmouth are set to be axed imminently.

The Isle of Wight Trust (IWT) and Portsmouth Hospitals University Trust (PHU) reportedly need to cut their combined workforce by 798 whole-time equivalent roles as part of measures to achieve the group's 2025-26 savings targets,

The news was revealed via recently released board papers.

An Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust spokesperson said:

“We have a responsibility to provide high quality care within our financial resources.
"Last year we achieved significant improvements across finance and performance through management of our temporary staff and transforming our corporate services.
"We need to further tighten our controls on temporary workforce and recruitment activity, as well as well as seeking further opportunities to transform how we deliver within each organisation and at scale across our Group and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight system."
