Hundreds of Isle of Wight businesses and residential properties have been hit by a loss of water supply this afternoon (Thursday) after a water main burst on the outskirts of Newport earlier today.
People in Rookley, Shanklin, Wroxall, Alverstone and Newchurch have been hit by the ongoing issue – with either low pressure or a total loss of water suffered as a result.
Southern Water earlier sent engineers to the Blackwater area, where the issue was discovered earlier.
A statement from Southern Water said:
"We’re sorry customers in Shanklin, Wroxhall, Newchurch, Alverstone, and Rookley on the Isle of Wight are experiencing a loss of supply or low pressure.
"Our teams are repairing a burst on a strategic trunk main at Blackwater near the River Medina which has impacted Cooks Castle Reservoir.
"We are arranging the delivery of bottled water to our vulnerable customers on our Priority Services Register.
"Our helpline number for vulnerable customers needing access to bottled water as a priority, or for other customer queries relating to the supply interruption, is 0330 303 0368.
"We are also setting up bottled water stations for customers. We will announce details of where they are when they are set up.
"We will be providing further updates on our website and social media channels about this throughout the day."
A time for completion of the work has yet to be confirmed.
