Firefighters tackled a large blaze at a pub in Gurnard after smoke and flames were spotted coming from the roof in the early hours of Tuesday morning (March 25).

Crews were called to the Portland Inn on Worsley Road just before 12:30am and arrived to find the fire spreading through the first floor and into the loft space.

Residents in adjoining accommodation were safely evacuated as crews worked to contain the flames.

Firefighters from Newport, Ryde, East Cowes, Sandown and Shanklin responded to the scene, using an aerial ladder, main jets, and hose reel jets to bring the fire under control.

A relief strategy was also implemented, with Hampshire crews assisting both at the site and in maintaining fire cover across the Island.

By 6am, the fire had been extinguished, though the entire building sustained significant damage.

Firefighters remained on-site this morning to continue dampening down and ensure the fire is fully out.
