Network Rail Seeks Consent For Historic Brading Footbridge Works

A public body has sought approval for a handrail and lighting system on an historic Isle of Wight footbridge.

Network Rail’s part retrospective application seeks Listed Building Consent (LBC) for a works scheme at the Grade II listed Brading Railway Station Footbridge on Station Road.

A submitted Planning and Heritage Statement says the project will ‘improve accessibility and safety’, lowering the ‘risk of slips, trips and falls’.

Proposed handrails will be made out of zinc yellow, with LED lighting fitted onto the bridge’s staircases.

Plans also include anti-climb LED lighting along the bridge’s central section.

Network Rail said:

“It is considered that the proposed works are in accordance with both modern health and safety standards, and national and local planning policy.

“Importantly the works will not have an adverse impact on the Grade II listed structure.

“The public benefits of the works will outweigh any harm that may be caused to the historic value of this structure.

“To allow both the bridge to open to rail passengers and the removal of the temporary footbridge, a handrail and lighting system has already been installed on the footbridge.

“It should be noted however that the handrails currently installed are not in accordance with the plans submitted as part of this application, the difference being that the handrail supporting posts at the bottom of the staircase are to be moved closer to the concrete pad, subject to obtaining LBC.”

The council’s public consultation on the application ends on May 19 and a decision is expected on June 9.
