New Carnival has announced Trash to Trend, a vibrant, youth-led sustainable fashion

show taking place at the stunning Appuldurcombe House.

This event will showcase bold and brilliant designs made by young, emerging creatives using recycled and repurposed materials.

Funded by Arts Council England, the event will be hosted by local celebrity Quivers, the catwalk will come alive with innovative costumes, all competing for cash prizes.

The event features live DJ sets, delicious food from Honey’s Doughnuts and The Big Eat Co,

and an exhibition of creative works, including a rare chance to try on and style a ‘Sustenta Carnival’ costume — direct from the streets of Rio, Brazil! Shoppers and vintage lovers will also adore the Wardrobe of Weirdness pop-up stall, offering exquisite pre-loved fashion treasures.

Judges include Quivers- drag queen, Joel Lines - St Martins graduate and creative designer, and Marnie Janaway - Brand, fashion and product design expert Trash to Trend is part of New Carnival’s Isle of Creativity, a youth arts initiative for people aged 14–30.

The fashion show is the culmination of a series of hands-on workshops teaching sustainable fashion techniques.

Participants have designed and made costumes around a chosen theme, entirely from recycled materials.

Taking part are young people from: New Carnival’s Isle of Creativity group, IOW College (Art & Design and Foundation Learning) The Bay CE Secondary School, and The Island Free School.

Individual entries are also welcome! Young people interested in creating and showcasing an outfit can register here.

Hannah Ray, New Carnival director states:

“New Carnival is fascinated by the crossover between haute couture and carnival costume.
"Both are handmade, one-off pieces based on themes — the difference often lies in the budget.
"High fashion can afford luxury, but carnival designers often turn trash into treasure. We’re excited to see what these incredible young people create — the future of fashion!”
