Site plans have been unveiled for an expansion of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) provision at an Isle of Wight secondary school.
County Hall is looking to build a ‘double mobile classroom’ building at The Bay CE Secondary School in Sandown to increase its resourced places for autistic children from 15 to 20, according to a Design and Access statement.
The extra SEND provision at The Bay, scheduled for September 2025, will help the council deal with ‘school place pressures’ from increased numbers of Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
EHCPs are documents which determine educational, health and social needs and additional support to cater to these.
“The Isle of Wight Council has a statutory duty to provide sufficient specialist educational places for children and young people with SEND on the Isle of Wight,” the statement said.
“The current Strategic Review of Specialist Places for children and young people with an EHCP showed that further specialist provision for SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health), ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition), SLCN (Speech, Language and Communication Needs) and MLD (Moderate Learning Difficulties) was needed both at primary and secondary education.
“The proposal is for a prefabricated mobile double classroom building located at the (Sandown) site to provide classroom and ancillary spaces such as cloak rooms and teachers’ cupboards.”
A final decision on the plans is expected on May 22.
