A Sandown town councillor has thrown her hat into the ring for an Isle of Wight by-election.

Following the resignation today of Tig Outlaw, the Conservative Party’s County Hall representative for Lake North, Emily Brothers is confirmed as the Labour Party’s candidate in the contest to replace him.

The council has not yet announced a date for a Lake North by-election.

Mr Outlaw was elected to the council in 2017 and last fought an election in 2021, winning 399 votes – ahead of the Island Independent Network on 284, the Labour Party on 135 and the Greens on 92.

Ms Brothers previously stood as a Labour candidate for the Isle of Wight East consituency in the general election last year, coming fourth with 6,264 votes.

She said:

“Today’s resignation demonstrates Conservatives have abandoned residents in Lake North. Local people have been left behind, they deserve better.
“I’m stepping forward to serve residents in Lake North, working with the community to tackle everyday challenges and seek opportunities to flourish.
“I thank and wish Tig Outlaw well.”
Chair of the Isle of Wight Labour Party Phil Attfield said: “Emily brings a wealth of experience and skills to effectively represent Lake North. She has varied interests, including serving as a governor with The Bay schools.
“Emily has the drive, insight and compassion to make a positive difference for Lake North.”

No other candidates have so far announced their intention to enter the race.
