Football: East Cowes Vics Claim Victory In Relegation Three-Pointer

East Cowes Vics recorded a super victory in their weekend Wessex League game, while Cowes Sports turned in a fine display before going down to Premier League leaders Hamworthy Town.

Valuable points for Vics

Two goals from Sam Cant helped East Cowes Vics storm to an impressive 4-1 victory over Whitchurch United at Beatrice Avenue. Vics manager Richie Woodburn had earmarked this game as a possible three-pointer to help move further away from the threat of relegation from Division One, and his players didn’t disappoint. Cant’s double was complemented by one each from Jimmi Burton and Ryan Gregory, with Whitchurch’s consolation coming from Nathan Lynch.

Vics are now four points ahead of third-bottom Fawley, but even more importantly, eight points clear of second-bottom Fleet Spurs, with two sides expected to be relegated. Woodburn is hoping the win over Whitchurch will provide the spur to put in another good show at second-placed Folland Sports tomorrow night (8pm kick off).

Yachtsmen go down fighting

Cowes Sports pushed Premier League leaders Hamworthy United all the way before their trip to the mainland ended in a 4-2 defeat. Jimmy Mumford snd John McKie scored their goals. The Yachtsmen have been showing good improvement in recent weeks, and despite returning without a point, the display will give them plenty of incentive for another tough one tomorrow night at fourth-placed Bashley (8pm kick off).

Newport suffer wash-out

Newport’s scheduled Division One game against Oakfield as postponed because their temporary ground at Smallbrook Stadium was waterlogged. Port, still pushing hard for a play-off spot, will be looking for a convincing victory tomorrow night when they switch to East Cowes Vics’ Beatrice Avenue ground to take on Totton and Eling, who are rock bottom of Division One, having drawn one and lost 14 of their league games on their travels so far this season. (Kick-off 7.45pm)
