Islanders Invited To Show Support For Ukraine In Newport This Weekend

People are being invited to show their support for Ukraine by attending a day of peace at St James' Square in Newport on Sunday (March 13).

It follows a gathering at the location last Sunday (March 6) where Ukrainian flags, ribbons, flowers and placards were presented as part of a global day of action for peace.

A group of around 40 people met in St James' Square and began with a speech from a long time anti-war campaigner, followed by two minutes of silence in respect of the victims of war in Ukraine.

People in attendance gave out flowers, ribbons and flags, with several Ukrainian nationals in attendance.

They spoke of their shock and upset, but also the positive response from the global community in support of Ukraine.

The gathering continued for a full hour as people discussed the importance of campaigning for a peaceful resolution.

This Sunday's gathering in St James’ Square will begin at midday.
