Parking Removed From Centre Of East Cowes Could “Finish” The Town

York Avenue

An East Cowes business owner says the “whole town is in an "uproar" at the news that parking in the town’s centre could be removed.

The proposals would see around 60 parking spaces on York Avenue and the surrounding area cease to exist. They are currently free for one hour with no return in the center of town.

Jayne Read, who owns the Vintage Emporium shop on York Avenue, says the move would “devastate” businesses in the area, of which there are around 100.

Meanwhile, a petition has been launched opposing the plans, which can be signed here.

Jayne told Isle of Wight Radio:

“Our Isle of Wight Council says it is supporting local businesses but how can they be when they are going to do something like this? It’s just not on...If you remove those parking spaces I feel very sorry for local residents, not just the businesses because if people can’t park into town they are going to start using the side roads… It’s going to impact on the whole town.”

She added:

“There’s no justification for it - it’s just as if they are trying to finish the town off as far as businesses are concerned. They aren’t putting it out yet at the moment as far as a public consultation is concerned which I think is very very wrong”.

The proposals will be discussed at a Town Council meeting tonight (Thursday).

As a result of the plans, it’s thought drivers could be forced to park in the Red Funnel car park - at a cost or on nearby streets.

View the application via the planning portal on the Isle of Wight Council website HERE.

Alternatively, you can view the plans in person - which are displayed outside the Town Hall.

You can also email the town clerk with your objections at c[email protected] so they can be submitted in the Town Council meeting.

We've asked the Isle of Wight Council and Red Funnel for a comment.
