The Mule The Merrier — Embarr-Ass-Ment Of Riches For Carisbrooke Castle Herd

Two little donkeys explore their new home this Christmas at Carisbrooke Castle — completing the resident drove there for the first time in nearly a decade.

Jester and Jingles — named by public vote — join Jack, Jill, Jigsaw, and Juno  to form a team of six donkeys who would have historically worked the water wheel at the castle.

Just like the four donkeys already at the castle, the new arrivals’ names start with a ‘J’ – a tradition inspired by Charles I, who was imprisoned at Carisbrooke during the Civil War and signed his letters with a ‘J’ to conceal his identity when planning his escapes.

Donkey demonstrations can be enjoyed every day Carisbrooke Castle is open to visitors.

Over the winter the castle is open every weekend, and from Boxing Day to New Year.
