A Sky Original drama starring Kenneth Branagh and based on Boris Johnson's first tumultuous months as prime minister is set to air next month.

A new trailer for This England has been unveiled for the six-episode series which will launch on Sky Atlantic and the streaming service NOW on 21 September.

The drama follows the impact on the country of the first wave of the COVID pandemic.

Academy Award winner Branagh plays the role of Mr Johnson as he grapples with the pandemic and Brexit against a backdrop of a controversial political and personal life.

The drama is set inside the halls of government and interwoven with stories from around the country.

It features experts and scientists racing against time to understand the virus, including the doctors and nurses working to overcome the initial challenges posed by the coronavirus outbreak.

The role of care workers is also highlighted alongside people who saw their lives thrown into turmoil.

Originally titled This Sceptred Isle, the series is based on the first-hand testimony of people inside 10 Downing Street, the Department of Health, and the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies.

Ophelia Lovibond, who is known for her roles in BBC sitcom W1A and Guardians Of The Galaxy, portrays the prime minister's wife Carrie Symonds.

This England was co-written and directed by Michael Winterbottom.

This England launches on Sky Atlantic and NOW on Wednesday 21 September.
