£11.5k Raised (So Far Online) By West Wight Solent Swimmers 2020

Swimmers have braved the choppy sea conditions to complete the 1.3 mile Solent Swim in aid of the West Wight Sports and Community Centre.

So far, £11,500 has been raised via online donations but it's hoped the event will raise £15,000 - thanks to the efforts of just 25 swimmers this year.

Windy weather meant the event had to be postponed on Saturday and Sunday - but eventually went ahead yesterday (Monday).

The swimmers left Hurst Castle at 9.45am yesterday and Charlie Bagot was the first to arrive at Colwell Bay, 34 minutes later.

Isle of Wight Radio's Iona Stewart-Richardson finished fourth in 50 minutes and was the second woman out of the water. She was also escorted safely across the water by Isle of Wight Radio's Adam Richardson in a kayak.

Wendy Wheeler, who has secondary cancer, used it as an opportunity to show people could live well with a terminal illness, as previously reported.

Meanwhile, Megan Eggeling, at 78, was the oldest swimmer.

Freshwater Independent Lifeboat and a fleet of kayakers all ensured the safety of the swimmers.
