80 Young People Given A Chance To Be Rookie Lifeguards

Ryde Beach Lifeguards (RBLG) that operates the Beach Lifeguard services in both Ryde and Sandown, welcomed their Rookie Lifeguards back this summer, with 80 children taking part in the program. 

The programme is spread over 6 days in August, teaching children aged 8 to 15 years old valuable lifesaving skills, following the Royal Life Saving Society curriculum. The Rookies learnt about tides, currents, waves and much more, as well as first aid training and lifesaving skills in the swimming pool and sea. 

All the Rookie Lifeguards obtained Rookie Lifesaving Awards, alongside specialisms for the Beach. 

With two of the Rookies Noah Girling and Eleanor Rice, obtaining their Bronze Star Awards and will be working towards their Bronze Medallions in the winter months. 

Todd Miller, Beach Manager, said:

"The Rookie Lifeguard programme is something we all thoroughly enjoy delivering and is the future of lifesaving on the Island. Two of our Rookie Lifeguards that have taken part in the programme for a number of years, will be going onto complete their RLSS Beach and Pool Lifeguard Courses in 2025. Most importantly, the skills our Rookies learn with us, could help save someones life one day”
