Abandon Chip: Housing Plans Revealed For Former Cowes Takeaway

The owner of a now defunct Isle of Wight chippy has applied to turn the building into a house.

Andrew Pritchard, owner of Chip Ahoy fish and chips shop, on Victoria Road, Cowes, and the brother of the late Mark Pritchard, has sought planning permission to turn the once popular takeaway into a two bedroom house over two floors.

His proposal includes an “open plan” living and dining area on the building’s ground floor, along with an attached kitchen.

The house, which would be leased out to an individual or housing association, would also have two bedrooms and a bathroom on its lower ground floor, according to a Design and Access Statement prepared by Moose Consulting.

The document said:

“Unfortunately, the Chip Ahoy business is no longer commercially viable due to continued energy increases and supply chain price increases which have rendered the business ineffective.

“Although in a residential area the business does not benefit from sufficient footfall to sustain a business of this nature.

“The business is currently dormant having been running at a loss for some time.”

The existing face brick building at 36 Victoria Road has a slate tile roof and roughly 80 square metres of living space.

The building was previously residential before its use as a fish and chips shop.

Chip Ahoy underwent a widely publicized closure in September 2022.

Announcing the closure, the owner at the time said:

“I just wanted to say a big thank you to all the customers that have supported me through the years. There have been some hard times and some good times.”

The deadline for public comments on Pritchard’s proposal is Friday November 1.

A statutory decision date for the application has been scheduled for Friday November 22.
