Islanders have slammed the "absolutely disgraceful" way fish in a dried out canoe lake in Sandown have been treated, as they battle desperately to save them.

The lake, situated next to Dinosaur Isle, has seen extremely low water levels due to the heatwave.

Isle of Wight Radio went to see the volunteers trying to rescue the wildlife.

WATCH:

Yesterday (Tuesday), Islanders helping out at the lake were greeted by police officers, as Isle of Wight Radio reported.

An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson also told Isle of Wight Radio that the Environment Agency is the lead authority, despite the fact it owns a third of the lake.

A spokesperson said:

“Whilst the Isle of Wight Council is the responsible land owner for one third of the lake, the Environmental Agency are the lead agency regarding water levels and the wellbeing of fish stock and are advising and liaising with the predominant land owner to resolve any issues.

“If members of the public have concerns. They should phone the environment Agency incident number 0800 80 70 60.”

The Environment Agency has previously said the fish are not allowed to be removed, unless it is authorised.

Isle of Wight Radio has asked for an updated comment.
