Sandown Town Council had to close the accessible toilets at St John’s Toilets and Eastern Gardens, following a series of Arson attempts and criminal damage.
The council has now commissioned urgent repairs in order to re-open as soon as possible.
Sandown Town Council recently installed CCTV at both locations and forwarded footage of individuals, believed to be responsible, to the police.
Town Mayor Alex Lightfoot said:
"It is sad that wilful criminal damage and fires has resulted in the closure of the town’s accessible toilets, impacting on disabled users and incurring significant cost to the Town Council and local council taxpayers.
"We are working with the Police to identify those responsible, setting fire to property is a serious and potentially life-threatening thing to do, and (we) will do all (we) can to hold those responsible to account for what has happened."
The Town Council invested in new public toilets, and a 'Changing Places' amenity, to improve and enhance amenities for disabled people.
