BBC One Show To Broadcast Film About Archaeological Exploration Of 1970 Isle Of Wight Pop Festival

Island-based People Media UK have another short film to be broadcast on the BBC One Show tonight (Friday) exploring the site of the 1970 Isle of Wight Pop Festival at Afton Down.

Last month, for the first time, archaeologists and metal detecting enthusiasts joined forces to do a preliminary exploration of the iconic site.

Landscape Archaeologist Kelly Wetherick led the ‘modern archaeology’ project with support from Vectis Archaeological Trust, Dimbola Lodge and the Vectis Seachers.

The programme was presented by Matt Allwright (below), who said that the 1970 festival really was the biggest and the best.

Matt is a keen musician and he joined local detectorist Shirley Robinson to help find relics and remnants – and plenty of ring pulls - that lie beneath the newly ploughed fields.

People Media UK’s Tony Steyger said:

“For me as a film maker, making this programme was about spending time with people, looking back in time, spurred on by what might be hidden from sight, discovering that this monumental event was probably not the first to be held at Afton Down."

Festival Veteran Roger Simmonds, who has been to every IW Festival since 1968, said:

“I think this festival was as good as it gets, the music, the atmosphere, the setting, it really was the real deal.”

Tune in to see what they found tomorrow on BBC 1’s One Show at 7pm tomorrow or watch on iPlayer afterwards.
