Buoy Mistaken For Mine Leads To Lifeboat Call-Out

Pic: Yarmouth Lifeboat

A buoy, which was mistaken for a WW2 mine, led to a call-out for Yarmouth Lifeboat.

At 12.05 yesterday (Sunday), Yarmouth's RNLI Volunteer Crew were paged by HM Solent Coastguard to several reports from members of the public of a potential mine floating in the water located off Hurst Castle.

The Severn Class All Weather Lifeboat (ALB) Eric and Susan Hiscock 17-25 left Yarmouth Harbour and was on scene within 10 minutes.

The object was investigated by the crew and was found to be a wave data buoy.

Photos and details were then passed on to Solent Coastguard for a more detailed inspection, who were happy with the crew’s assessment of the buoy.

With no further action required, the ALB was stood down and returned to station.

Yarmouth Lifeboat was ready for service at 13:05

If you ever have any concerns about a person or objects in the water, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
